Nearly 20 years ago, when Nathan and I started TeamGantt, we had one goal in mind–a tool that would help us focus on what needed to be done, and finish on time.

At the time, both of us were working in my family's commercial roofing company building an internal CRM, estimating software, and time clock. However, we both had other responsibilities at the business. Falling behind on takeoffs, estimates, and proposals while building custom, in-house software simply wasn't an option. We needed something to help us prioritize and execute with the little time we had.

We tried the desktop Gantt charts that were popular back then, and nothing really worked. Everything had a tradeoff we were unwilling to accept. That's what led us to say, “We can build this ourselves.” After all, we were already building custom software for the roofing company, why not build custom software for ourselves? A few weekends later, we had something we could use. Soon after that, TeamGantt was born.

Fast forward a few months, and we realized we had something we could bring to market. If we were having these tensions with our schedules and workloads, we knew others would as well. Soon after, we launched a public beta and started getting interested people almost right away.

It was clear there was a need for a tool to help see the whole project and share it with everyone. Most importantly, it had to be easy to use. We quickly learned we were not alone. TeamGantt soon grew to support millions of users in over 120 countries.

A look back at TeamGantt 2.0 and what we got wrong

Just over 2 years ago, we launched TeamGantt 2.0. It was our biggest launch to date that completely rebuilt our Gantt chart from the ground up. For over 15 years, TeamGantt 1.0 was the gold standard for online Gantt charts. TeamGantt 2.0 was a major success with new support for features such as:

  • Critical Path

  • Advanced dependencies

  • An improved drag-and-drop experience

  • Enhanced filtering

  • An improved UI

  • All the additional columns you'd want: start and end date, dependencies, color pickers, task estimates, cost management, etc.

It even opened the door for features connected to the Gantt chart but not structurally part of the schedule, things like: material procurement, client portals, and subcontractor portals just to name a few.

However, we missed the mark on one of the most important things to you: blazing fast performance. Especially when it came to large projects.

Today, we introduce TeamGantt 3.0

TeamGantt 3.0 raises the bar further than we ever have. We still support all of the same great features you've come to love from TeamGantt 1.0 and 2.0, but we’re addressing some of the largest areas of feedback we’ve received over the years.

Performance

Let’s start with what matters most to you. TeamGantt 3.0 is the framework for the future, not the destination.

We've already solved the most common performance issues in what's launched today. But, soon we’ll be rolling out a renewed Gantt chart. It will have all the same great features you've come to love from TeamGantt, except it runs orders of magnitude faster. We tested and confirmed this performance boost both internally and with a select set of customers.

We’re very eager to get this into every customer’s hands, and we’ll be rolling it out to everyone starting this month. If you currently have performance issues, please sign up for early access.

Design refresh: More room to work, less time searching

Today we’re also launching the overhaul of our application’s main interface with a refreshed color theme. Some of you have already had the opportunity to get an early preview of this.

  • We've packed a lot more value and customization into the sidebar, making the whole app more accessible to you.

  • We've removed the footer to give you more screen real estate to focus on your projects.

  • We've revamped where filters and navigation live to reclaim additional space, getting the application out of your way so you can focus on what’s most important within your projects.

A new command palette allows you to quickly navigate from one project to another, jump between custom boards, or search for that task you just can’t find. Use CMD+K or CTRL+K to open the Command Palette and search for where you want to go next. It may take a little bit to get used to, but soon, we believe this will be the primary way people navigate TeamGantt.

AI assistant in BETA

For nearly a year, we've had an AI assistant that helped you build your initial project. It helped you get from no schedule to one that only needed a few touchups in seconds—reducing project creation time by well over 80%.

This new agent doesn't just help you build your project, but can also help you manage it too.

Do you have a question about overdue tasks, need to adjust the schedule to accommodate that change order, or perhaps delay all remaining tasks on the project because the weather got in the way? No worries! Simply prompt the agent, and we’ll take care of the rest. You can now get back to focusing on the work that needs to be done to finish your project.

All enterprise subscriptions have access today, and we’ll continue to roll it out to other paid plans over the next 30 days. If you want to skip the line, sign up for early access.

More features we just launched

Today, we’re also introducing 5 key features that will help you manage your projects even better:

  1. Client portal: A simple and powerful way for you to share curated portions of your project with your client. Have an internal chat with your client, so that you can keep everything in one place. No more text messages, emails, or random voicemails. By keeping everything in your client portal, you and your client never miss a detail.

  2. Subcontractor portal: If you manage subcontractors, you know how hard it can be to keep schedules aligned. With our new subcontractor portal, all you need is their phone number. Once added, you’ll be able to send their TeamGantt tasks right to their phone. With your subs in mind, we're keeping things simple–No need to install any apps, set up accounts, or remember passwords. Everything is managed through a self-authenticated link sent to them via text message. Most importantly, they can confirm or decline any request you send their way. This way, you find out the bad news right away, not when they don’t show up when you expect them.

  3. Procurement board: Do you run projects that require materials to be ordered in a timely manner to prevent delays? For more than a year, you've been able to track these materials on your project. Today, we aggregate that data for you in one global view. Your procurement manager no longer has to skim through each project to make sure they’re ordering the right materials at the right time. Open your procurement board to review and update the status of all the materials for all your projects.

  4. Financial forecasting: We’ve brought cost estimating to your task, as well as the ability to tag every task with a unique cost breakdown number. We recommend using the same code that’s in your billing system for easy checks and balances.Use this number to sync to your accounting software. Use the new cost estimating and the existing cost tracking to predict not just how much you’re expected to bill, but also how much you’re expected to pay each month.

  5. Custom fields: Every business needs to track something unique—something off-the-shelf apps won’t support. TeamGantt was not immune from that either. However, today we’re also announcing custom fields. Quickly add and manage all the things that are unique to your business and your projects. In a matter of seconds, you can be set up to track everything you need to bring your projects to completion.

Client and subcontractor portals, and the procurement board are available in Builder Edition today. Book your demo to learn more.

We're so excited to see where TeamGantt 3.0 is heading, and we can't wait for you to see it too! Thank you for being part of the TeamGantt family.
